Frequently Asked Questions

Why was Exploring Medicine created?

Exploring Medicine was created to help Touro University Nevada students learn about a wide variety of specialties before they go on rotations. In today’s day and age, matching to your specialty of choice is becoming more competitive. We want to help medical students find what they love early on so they can have a longer time to tailor their application towards that respective field to look more competitive themselves. We believe that the earlier you know what you want to do, the better your chances are at getting there!

How does it work?

We will bring in guest speakers that speak about their specialty/subspecialty to talk about what it is they do on a weekly basis, what personality or character traits fit well for their field, what they did to set their own success up dating back to medical school, and the future of their field. We will be working diligently to bring in D.O. physicians, as we believe they may be more relatable.

What are membership dues?

Membership dues are $15 for all four years. This money is used to provide the best meetings possible for our members and will be used only to benefit the member body. After signing up on the website, you can pay membership dues by giving cash to any executive member or by venmo.

Are there really that many choices to choose from?

Yes! According to AAMC Careers in Medicine, there are over 120 specialties/subspecialties to choose from. Because healthcare is becoming more expansive, the lines of specialties start to become blurred. There are several ways to one path, and one path to several other different paths. There are specialists who are double-board certified, pursued fellowships, or became apprentices to learn how to incorporate different procedures and/or tools into their scope of practice. The possibilities are endless, but we hope to explore as many of them as possible.

Other than guest speakers what else does this club offer?

We’ve been working to establish good relationships with our guest speakers. Being a member of the club gives you exclusive access for possible mentorship, research opportunities, and shadowing experiences with our guest speakers. Though each of these may not be possible with each individual speaker for whatever reason, we will work diligently to make sure you get the resources needed to pursue the specialty/field you are interested in.

What does it mean to be a Distinguished Member?

Gold Members are individuals who have shown extreme dedication to the club’s mission and wanting to better educate themselves. After paying membership dues, members must complete the following before graduation to achieve Gold Membership:

  • Attend 6 guest presentations
  • Attend 1 volunteer event
  • Write 1 article for the Exploring Medicine Blog (more information on the member dashboard)

Becoming a Distinguished Member is a prestigious thing. Each Distinguished Member will receive a graduation cord and will be something you can list on your resume. We believe completing these tasks compliment your medical education and will make you a more well-rounded applicant for residency.
